In my opinion the only way to get shredded abs is to get your body fat down. Ab exercises won't do that for you. You need diet and cardio to accomplish this. Once you are lean, doing extra ab work will help your abs look more defined. When I finally got lean my coach @jaycutler had me do the following 3 exercises for my abs.
• Hanging Leg Raises
This hits the lower part of the abs however the entire core gets a workout with this movement.
• Crunches
Crunches use a short range of motion which means you keep tension on the upper abs for the whole set
• Kneeling Cable Crunches
Kneeling cable crunches is a great way to work the whole ab area.

I would work abs 1-2 a week, 5 sets of 12-15 reps of each of the 3 exercises
